Chapter Seventeen

Wynona didn’t bother to knock this time when she went back to Rascal’s office.

Rascal’s head jerked up, showing a large red spot on his face. “Geez, Wy.” he rubbed his eyes. “Warn a guy.”

Wynona sighed. “You were sleeping at your desk? Why didn’t you just go home?”

Rascal shook his head hard, as if to wake himself up. “I’m not done working.”

Walking to his chair, she began to massage the back of his neck.

Groaning, Rascal let his head fall forward.

“You’ve gone without sleep before,” she pressed. “Why is today so bad?”

Rascal huffed. “I was already sleep deprived before this happened.” He yawned widely. “But I’ll be fine. Eventually, it’ll get better.”

Wynona pulled a chair over and sat next to him. “I hope it’s before the baby arrives.”

Rascal smiled widely. “I don’t think it’s me she’s gonna want in the middle of the night.”

Wynona play-smacked his arm. “You can change the baby’s diaper. Then I’ll do the feeding.”

“Violet can do it.”

Negative, Wolfy-boy. I don’t deal with poop. My job is to teach Magnus about being a pain in your backside, not how to keep himself clean.

Rascal glared at the tiny mouse preening on Wynona’s shoulder.

“Anyway…” Wynona tried to change the subject. “You need to look for someone else. Nima’s innocent.”

“How can you tell?” Rascal asked, leaning back in his chair. “She told us she didn’t know anything.”

“She told me the same,” Wynona responded. “But Violet was smart enough to catch a couple of things.”

“Such as?”

I hear the doubt in that tone, Violet snapped. If you want Magnus to recognize your pictures, you better be careful with what you’re implying.

Rascal chuckled. “What did your brilliant familiar come up with now?”

Better. Violet sniffed.

“The blood stains on her clothes,” Wynona continued. “They match the cuts on Adele’s body.”

Rascal frowned. “Uh…”

The door burst open. “What’s this about blood?” Chief Ligurio demanded as he stormed inside. “Skymaw just told me that one of the new idiots in this station didn’t process Ms. Drach’s clothes and that you found something.” Chief Ligurio stood in front of the desk, legs apart and hands on his hips.

Sighing, Wynona reached across Rascal and grabbed his phone. “Amaris? This is Wynona. I’m in the Deputy-Chief’s office. Could you please send one regular and one blood-green tea here?” Wynona listened. “Yes, that’s perfect. Thank you.”

Chief Ligurio raised an eyebrow. “Green tea? Really?”

“You and Rascal both need a little pick me up,” Wynona stated, refusing to apologize for watching out for her men. “Since Celia isn’t around to nag you about taking care of yourself, I’ll do it for her.”

Chief Ligurio’s jaw tightened.

“Back to the blood,” Rascal urged.

Wynona nodded and leaned back. “I’m almost positive that if you took Nima’s shirt and laid it across Adele’s body, you’d find that the blood patterns are an exact match. For that matter, the blood on Nima’s arms and neck also match.”

Chief Ligurio frowned. “Which would indicate that Ms. Drach was laying on Ms. Le Torneau.”

Wynona’s nodding grew. “Right. If Nima had been stabbing Adele, there should have been splatters, not stripes the same size as the cuts.
